Sunmonu's Bill to Establish College of Information and Technology in Oyo State Passes First Reading
On 5 July 2017, a Bill sponsored by Senator Monsurat Sunmonu to establish a "College of Information and Technology in Oyo State" passed first reading in the Senate.
The Bill seeks to establish an institution expected to be located in Oyo State. The proposed "College of Information and Technology" is designed to ensure equity and access to Specialised Information and Communication Technology at tertiary level.
Under Sunmonu's Bill, the College is intended to be a conventional College, with limited and focused faculties and programmes specialising in ICT.
Speaking on the Bill, the Oyo Central Senator said "This Bill was conceptualised and drafted in 2016, and we considered the peculiar circumstances in Oyo state while preparing it. We have brilliant youth in our state and if established, the institution will seriously aid youth development. In this day and age we must acknowledge that Information and Communication Technology plays an integral part in national development. This institution is designed to nurture and harness technical and innovative minds to lead Nigeria in the future and compete with countries that are currently more advanced."
It will be recalled that Senator Sunmonu has been an ardent advocate of Education. During her contributions to the 2016 budget she made passionate calls for increased funding for Technical Colleges, and has also facilitated both International and Local scholarships.
